Being a mother with a toddler is an exhilarating journey, but it also comes with its set of challenges. And when the time comes for you to add working from home into the mix, you’re on a full-on rollercoaster of responsibilities, joys, and, sometimes, chaos.
While you may feel that working from home with a toddler will be an absolutely impossible task, I promise you that you can cherish both your career and your precious moments with your little one — it’ll just take some flexibility (and a few deep breaths)! In this article, I’ll explore practical strategies and tips on how to work at home with a toddler without relying on child care, all while maintaining your sanity and your smile.
1. Embrace the Chaos

First and foremost, I totally understand that this is easier said that done. But it’s crucial to acknowledge that when you’re working from home with a toddler around, chaos is often the name of the game. There will be unexpected interruptions, spilled juice, and the occasional conference call featuring a cameo appearance by your toddler. Embrace it all with a sense of humor and flexibility.
While I totally understand that this can be difficult, it’s important to keep your cool and avoid getting angry with your toddler when dealing with interruptions. Working from home without childcare is not going to work if you aren’t able to be flexible and understand that occasional chaos is unavoidable!
2. Establish a Routine
Structure can be your best friend when you’re trying to manage both work and childcare from home. Create a daily routine that incorporates your toddler’s naptime and mealtimes while accommodating your work hours. Predictability can be reassuring for both you and your little one.
3. Nap Time Is Sacred

Nap time is your golden opportunity to dive into your work without distractions. Use this precious window of time to tackle your most important tasks or attend virtual meetings. Sleep is absolutely sacred.
4. Invest in Quality Toys and Activities
When you’re working, keeping your toddler engaged is key to maintaining your sanity. Invest in age-appropriate toys and activities that can captivate your child’s attention. Whether it’s building blocks, coloring books, or interactive apps, having a few go-to options can be a lifesaver.
If you’re looking for something quick, inexpensive, and stimulating for your toddler, there are a ton of educational toys out there that can be delivered within a day or two. While you’re working on your latest project brief, your little one can be practicing speech therapy or mastering their fine motor skills. These types of quality toys have been a lifesaver for me.
5. Utilize Screen Time Wisely
While we all strive to limit screen time, it can be a valuable tool when you’re working from home. Educational apps, age-appropriate TV shows, or interactive games can offer your toddler entertainment while you focus on your tasks. Just remember to use it in moderation, or screen time is not going to have a positive effect on either of you.
6. Set Boundaries

Teach your toddler to respect your workspace. Make it clear that when you’re in your designated work area, you need to concentrate. Use gentle but firm language and provide alternative activities for them to do nearby.
7. Work During Peak Toddler Independence
Toddlers have moments of independence, even if they are fleeting. Seize these opportunities of independent play to accomplish tasks that require less of your direct attention. Answering emails, making quick phone calls, or doing simpler administrative work can be tackled during these windows.
8. Engage in Learning Together
Working from home can be an amazing opportunity to bond with your toddler. Incorporate educational activities into your day, such as reading together or involving them in household chores (in a safe and supervised manner, of course!). Not only will this keep your child engaged, but it’s also a chance for quality time.
9. Share the Load
If you have a partner, discuss how you can share childcare responsibilities while you work. It’s so important to establish clear expectations and support each other in maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
10. Prioritize Self-Care
As a work-from-home mom with a toddler, it’s easy to put your needs last (some weeks I only shower once. Don’t judge me). But self-care is crucial for your well-being and your ability to handle the demands of parenting and work. You’re not going to be any good to anyone- including your toddler-if you don’t take care of your mental health. Make time for activities that rejuvenate you, whether it’s reading, exercising, or enjoying a long bath.
11. Leverage Your Support Network
Reach out to friends and family for help and support. Sometimes, a trusted friend or family member can take your toddler for a playdate or a short outing, giving you some uninterrupted work time.
12. Communicate with Your Employer

If you haven’t already, have an open conversation with your employer about your situation. Many companies are understanding and may be willing to provide flexibility in your work hours or adapt your workload to better accommodate your parenting responsibilities.
13. Be Patient with Yourself
Remember that you’re not alone in this journey. Every mother who has worked from home with a toddler has faced challenges. There will be tough days, and that’s okay. Be patient with yourself, forgive the occasional mishap, and celebrate your small victories.
Being a working parent with a toddler is a delicate balancing act, but it’s one that can be mastered with determination, creativity, and a whole lot of love. By establishing routines, setting boundaries, and tapping into your support network, you can create a thriving environment where you can excel in your career while cherishing the moments with your little one. Embrace the chaos, adapt, and remember that you are doing an incredible job as a work-from-home mom (even if you don’t always feel like you are ).
